Milan, Ohio was founded in 1817 by Ebenezer Merry on the site of a former Moravian Indian mission. The village was named after Milan, Italy in 1833 and became a lake port in 1826 by connecting to the Erie Canal through the Milan Canal. The village is the birthplace and childhood home of Thomas Edison It has several historic and cultural attractions, such as the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum, the Milan Canal Park, the Milan Historical Museum, and the Edison Local Schools Alumni Hall of Fame. The village also hosts annual events such as the Milan Melon Festival and the Edison Day Celebration.
