Oberlin is one of the most historically important and intellectually vibrant small cities in the United States, with a 2024 estimated population of approximately 8,329, situated in south-central Lorain County about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland. The city is defined by and home to Oberlin College — one of America's most distinguished liberal arts colleges and conservatories, founded in 1833 — which in 1835 became the first college in the United States to admit both women and Black students on a fully equal basis, making it a beacon of abolitionism and social justice. The college's Allen Memorial Art Museum houses a world-class collection of over 14,000 works and is free and open to the public. Oberlin was also a major station on the Underground Railroad; the famous Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858 — in which Oberlin residents and students rescued a freed Black man from federal slave catchers — was a pivotal moment in American abolitionist history. The Oberlin Conservatory of Music is the oldest conservatory in continuous operation in the United States and one of the most prestigious in the world. Other notable institutions include the Lorain County Joint Vocational School (located in Oberlin on a 100-acre campus), the Oberlin Inn, and the city's innovative EBus fare-free electric transit service launched in 2024.
