Vermilion is one of the most picturesque and beloved small cities on the entire Lake Erie shoreline, with a 2024 estimated population of approximately 10,400 split between Lorain County (west side) and Erie County (east side). Sitting at the mouth of the Vermilion River, the city is known for its stunning Harbour Town 1837 Historic District — a lovingly preserved collection of Captain's homes, Victorian residences, and charming shops and restaurants that ranks Vermilion among Ohio's most beautiful port destinations. Ohio Magazine has named Vermilion the "Best Port Stroll" in the state, and it is home to more beautifully maintained sea captains' homes than any other place in Ohio. The city still boasts a working soda fountain, a traditional town square, and summer concerts on the green. Notable institutions include the Inland Seas Maritime Museum (operated by the Great Lakes Historical Society, an acclaimed museum of Great Lakes maritime history), and the Vermilion River Reservation of the Lorain County Metro Parks. The city has hosted the Woollybear Festival — a beloved autumn tradition celebrating the woolly bear caterpillar — and is served by the Vermilion Local School District.
