Known as the Sandstone Center of the World, Amherst holds the extraordinary distinction of having been the world's leading producer of building sandstone for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, with its distinctive gray stone still visible in landmark buildings across northeast Ohio. The city's charming historic downtown earned official Ohio Main Street designation in 2002, and the Amherst Public Library anchors a vibrant civic core. Notable employers include Nordson Corporation (global industrial precision dispensing technology), KTM Sports Motorcycle America (North American motorcycle distributor headquarters), and the University Hospitals Amherst Health Center. Students are served by the Amherst Exempted Village School District, one of the top academic districts in northeastern Ohio, enrolling approximately 3,600 students across four schools. The city also operates its own Municipal Electric Department, established in 1936, and is a member of American Municipal Power.
