Carroll County is a quiet, rural northeastern Ohio county with Carrollton as its county seat. The county is named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Like its eastern Ohio neighbors, Carroll County has been significantly impacted by the shale energy boom of the Utica and Marcellus Shale formations, with natural gas drilling and processing operations becoming a major economic driver in recent decades. The county has a scenic, agricultural character with rolling hills and forested ridges characteristic of the western Allegheny Plateau. The historic McCook House Civil War Museum in Carrollton celebrates the remarkable McCook family, which contributed more officers and soldiers to the Union Army in the Civil War than any other American family. The Leesville Lake and surrounding state wildlife areas provide popular outdoor recreation. Healthcare and agriculture remain the primary civilian employers alongside energy sector operations.
