Defiance County is a northwest Ohio county with the city of Defiance as its county seat at the confluence of the Auglaize and Maumee rivers. The city takes its dramatic name from Fort Defiance, constructed by General Anthony Wayne in 1794 before his decisive victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The county has a strong manufacturing base, with major employers including General Motors (Defiance Metal Casting operations — now AAM, one of the world's leading manufacturers of driveline and drivetrain components), Sauder Woodworking (world's largest ready-to-assemble furniture manufacturer, headquartered in nearby Archbold in Fulton County), and Defiance Hospital (ProMedica). The county is also home to Defiance College — a private liberal arts college founded by the United Church of Christ. The Maumee River provides fishing, canoeing, and recreation. The county's flat terrain and excellent agricultural land make farming a cornerstone of the local economy.
