Hancock County is a prosperous northwest Ohio county centered on the city of Findlay — known as the Flag City USA for its extraordinary patriotic display of thousands of American flags each summer, and also as one of the most economically stable mid-sized cities in Ohio. Findlay sits atop vast oil and gas deposits that drove a spectacular "Findlay oil boom" in the 1880s, and energy heritage remains part of the city's identity. The county is home to Marathon Petroleum Corporation — one of the largest petroleum refining companies in the United States, headquartered in Findlay — and Whirlpool Corporation (major manufacturing operations). The University of Findlay (private liberal arts institution with exceptional equestrian and pre-veterinary programs) and Owens Community College (with a Findlay campus) provide education. The Findlay Reservoir and Riverbend Recreation Area offer recreation.

Key Industries & Major Employers
Petroleum refining, healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture.
Major employers include Marathon Petroleum Corporation (global headquarters, Findlay), Blanchard Valley Health System, Cooper Tire & Rubber (now part of Goodyear), and a cluster of petroleum and chemical industry suppliers. The University of Findlay adds educational employment and R&D activity.

Notable Economic Development Initiatives
Marathon Petroleum's Findlay headquarters provides high-wage employment and drives significant local business activity. Cooper Tire's integration into Goodyear's global operations continues. The Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development Council coordinates industrial recruitment. In 2024, a workforce development initiative targeting petroleum and chemical industry skills was launched in partnership with the University of Findlay.

Infrastructure & Investment Highlights
I-75 runs through Findlay. US-224 and US-68 provide secondary access. The Blanchard River flood control project (completed after 2007 flooding) has improved development opportunities in flood-plain areas. Rail service through CSX and Norfolk Southern connects manufacturers.
