2026 Population Estimate: 14,041 | Official Website: https://www.harrisoncountyohio.gov/
Harrison County is one of Ohio's smallest and most rural counties by population with the picturesque village of Cadiz as its county seat. The county is named for President William Henry Harrison and is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Clark Gable — the legendary Hollywood actor known as the "King of Hollywood" — whose birthplace in Cadiz is a local historic site. Like much of eastern Ohio, Harrison County has been significantly affected by Utica Shale drilling activity, which has brought investment and a degree of economic revival to this historically quiet, coal and farming county. The county has gentle rolling terrain typical of the western Allegheny foothills, and Tappan Lake — created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — is a major recreation destination. Harrison County has a deep Quaker heritage in its history and a strong sense of community identity despite its small size.
▸ Key Industries & Major Employers
Coal mining (transitioning), natural gas, agriculture, and small manufacturing.
Harrison County is historically a coal mining county now in transition. Key employers include Harrison Community Hospital, natural gas processing operations (Utica shale activity), and small manufacturers. The county's rural character supports farming and timber.
▸ Notable Economic Development Initiatives
Harrison County is benefiting from Utica shale natural gas royalties and midstream pipeline investment. ARC and EDA (Economic Development Administration) grants support community planning for the post-coal energy transition. The Southeast Ohio Development Association assists with economic strategy.
▸ Infrastructure & Investment Highlights
US-22 and SR-9 are the primary roads. Natural gas gathering and transmission pipelines form critical infrastructure. Rural broadband expansion is a priority through USDA and ARC funding. The county is studying solar and renewable energy development on former mine lands.
