Huron County is a north-central Ohio county on the Lake Erie plain with Norwalk as its county seat — a picturesque city known for its extraordinary collection of 19th-century Greek Revival architecture and its designation as the "Milan of the Reserve" for its early cultural sophistication. The county is home to the tiny village of Milan — the birthplace of Thomas Alva Edison, the greatest inventor in American history, whose restored birthplace is a popular historic site. The Milan Historical Museum and Thomas Edison Birthplace draw visitors year-round. The county has a strong agricultural economy, with fruit orchards, grain farming, and dairy operations. Major employers include Northern Ohio Truck Center (recreational vehicles/trucks), healthcare systems, and manufacturing operations. The county also includes significant portions of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge corridor, and Lake Erie access provides excellent walleye fishing for which the region is famous.
▸ Key Industries & Major Employers
Manufacturing, agriculture, food processing, and healthcare.
Major employers include Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Huron Consulting Group (smaller regional connection), and several precision manufacturers. Norwalk Furniture (now defunct legacy, replaced by other manufacturers) historically shaped the economy. The county has active agricultural processing, including grain and ethanol operations.
▸ Notable Economic Development Initiatives
Huron County Economic Development works with RGP Ohio for industrial recruitment. A 2024 agricultural processing investment was supported through JobsOhio. Rural broadband expansion targets the county's dispersed rural population.
▸ Infrastructure & Investment Highlights
US-250 and SR-18 are primary corridors. The Erie-Huron county area benefits from proximity to I-80/90 (Ohio Turnpike). Norfolk Southern rail serves manufacturers. The county is pursuing certified shovel-ready site designations to accelerate industrial recruitment.
