Ironton is located along the Ohio River. It has a population of about 10,434 people as of 2021. It was founded in 1849 by John Campbell, a pig iron manufacturer, and became one of the world's leading producers of iron in the 19th century. Some of the iron from Ironton was used for the USS Monitor, the first ironclad ship of the US Navy.
