Lorain is the largest city in Lorain County and the ninth-most populous city in Ohio, with a 2024 population estimate of approximately 65,751, situated on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Black River, about 25 miles west of Cleveland. Known as the International City for the extraordinary ethnic diversity that developed when immigrant workers from dozens of countries arrived to work in its steel mills and shipyards, Lorain is one of Ohio's most culturally rich cities — home to a large Hispanic and Latino community, alongside African American, Puerto Rican, and numerous European-heritage populations. Historically, the city was home to the American Shipbuilding Company (which built 909 ships including the massive M/V Paul R. Tregurtha), United States Steel (steel tubular operations), and Ford Motor Company (Lorain Assembly Plant). Today's major employers and institutions include Republic Steel (steel manufacturing), Mercy Health Lorain, the Nord Center (county mental health authority), the historic Lorain Palace Theatre (1928), and Lakeview Park — a beloved lakefront park featuring a beach, rose garden, and the iconic 1935 sandstone Easter basket sculpture. The Lorain City School District and Lorain County Community College serve the community's educational needs.
