Marion County is a north-central Ohio county with the city of Marion as its county seat — a city known for two remarkable distinctions: it was the hometown of Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States (whose restored Harding Home is a National Historic Landmark), and it is famous for being the historic center of the American power shovel industry — the enormous Marion Power Shovel Company produced machines that dug the Panama Canal, cut through mountains during the transcontinental railroad, and excavated some of the 20th century's most ambitious engineering projects. Major employers include Wyandot Snacks (snack food production — makers of Cap'n Crunch and other cereals), OhioHealth Marion General Hospital, and various manufacturing operations. The county has a pleasant agricultural and industrial character, and the Marion County Fair is one of Ohio's most attended.
