Paulding County is a small, flat, agricultural northwest Ohio county with Paulding as its county seat. The county was once part of the notorious Great Black Swamp — an enormous wetland that covered much of northwest Ohio and was one of the most formidable obstacles to westward settlement. After drainage in the 19th century, the rich black swamp soils became some of the most productive agricultural land in the state. The county has a strong agricultural economy producing corn, soybeans, and wheat. Industrial activity includes several manufacturing operations.
