Chillicothe served as Ohio's first state capital (1803-1810) and was a capital of the ancient Hopewell culture, whose spectacular earthworks at Mound City — preserved within the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park — are among the most magnificent pre-Columbian monuments in North America, recently inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The county is also home to the beloved outdoor drama Tecumseh! — the longest-running outdoor drama in Ohio, performed seasonally near Chillicothe for over 50 years, telling the story of the great Shawnee leader.
