Sidney is the county seat of Shelby County and has a population of about 20,421 people as of 2021. Sidney is named after the English poet Philip Sidney and has several elementary schools named after famous writers. Sidney has some notable architectural landmarks, such as the Second Empire courthouse, the Monumental Building dedicated to the Civil War dead, and the People's Federal Savings and Loan Association designed by Louis Sullivan. Sidney also has a large concrete bridge called the Big Four Bridge that carries rail traffic since 1924. Some of the places of interest in Sidney include the Graceland Cemetery, which has many monuments and memorials of large concrete angels and other structures and statues, and the Tawawa Park, which is a scenic natural park with trails, ponds, and picnic areas.
