Tallmadge is a city with a small part in Portage County and most of it in Summit County. It is one of the oldest cities in Summit County, founded in 1807 by Reverend David Bacon. It was named after Benjamin Tallmadge, a hero of the American Revolution. Tallmadge has a population of 18,394 as of 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Tallmadge is known for its historic town square, which is a traffic circle with eight streets radiating from it. The circle was modeled after New England designs and represents the influence of Connecticut settlers in the area. Some of the popular attractions near Tallmadge include the Akron Art Museum, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, Akron Zoo, and Gorge Metro Park.
The largest employers in Tallmadge are Summit Racing Equipment, a retailer of automotive parts and accessories; VanDevere Auto Group, a car dealership; and OMNOVA Solutions, a manufacturer of specialty chemicals and engineered surfaces.
