The county has remarkable historical significance as the site of one of the darkest events in American colonial history — the Gnadenhutten Massacre of 1782, in which 96 peaceful Christian Delaware Indians were murdered by Pennsylvania militia, an event commemorated at the Gnadenhutten Museum & Historical Park. The county is also home to the largest Amish population in Tuscarawas County and significant Swiss heritage communities in Sugarcreek (the Little Switzerland of Ohio), and hosts the world's largest continuous celebration of Swiss heritage at the annual Ohio Swiss Festival.
