Wakeman is a small, historic village with a 2024 population of 976, located in southern Lorain County (with portions extending into Huron County). Though modest in size, Wakeman carries remarkable historical depth. According to Underground Railroad historian Wilbur H. Siebert, Leverett B. Hill of Wakeman assisted 103 freedom seekers on their way to Canada during 1852 alone, making it one of the most active Underground Railroad stations in the region. After inventor and safety hero Garrett Morgan sold his traffic signal patent in 1923, he used the proceeds to purchase over a hundred acres near Wakeman where he established an all-Black Wakeman Country Club — a remarkable enterprise during the Jim Crow era. Wakeman is also designated as a Buckeye Trail Town, serving as a hub for hikers on the famous 1,444-mile Buckeye Trail. The village is served by the Western Reserve Local School District and by a branch of the Huron County Community Library. A distinctive Wakeman Buff sandstone was once quarried here and used in buildings throughout the region.
