Wellington is one of Lorain County's most historically significant and architecturally celebrated communities, with a 2024 estimated population of approximately 4,500, situated in the rural southern part of the county. Wellington holds the extraordinary honor of being named a "Best Old House Neighborhood" in Ohio by This Old House Magazine, reflecting its remarkable concentration of beautifully preserved 19th-century homes — Victorian, Italianate, and Greek Revival styles that recall Wellington's prosperous 19th-century heyday as the Cheese Capital of the World, when the village was home to over 40 cheese factories. The village also hosts the second largest county fair in Ohio — the Lorain County Fair held in Wellington — an annual summer institution drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors. Wellington is the birthplace of Archibald Willard, the American artist who painted the iconic patriotic masterwork Spirit of '76. The Wellington Exempted Village School District serves the community, and the Herrick Memorial Library has served Wellington readers since 1884. The village operates its own electric, water, and wastewater utilities and is accessible via US Route 18 and State Route 58.
